Home Remedies for Your Sick Pets

FROM:

Sometime our pets get sick at home and you may have a remedy in your pantry or medicine cabinet.

I saw a segment the other day on how to care for your pet if either: 1) It is too late/too early to go to the vet or 2) the illness is not severe enough to go to the vet. Remember: always consult your vet if you are not sure what to do. Also remember: I am not a vet and I am just reposting this advice I found that may be helpful to you and your pet.

3 Percent Solution of Hydrogen Peroxide
This remedy, used if your pet has gotten into something poisonous, induces vomiting. Give 1 teaspoon per 5 pounds of body weight; the process may be repeated once. Note: Mineral oil and milk of magnesia can be used for toxin ingestion.

Credit Card and Benadryl
This home remedy will help with bee stings. Remove the stinger by scraping the area with a credit card; apply a baking soda paste as a poultice. For an allergic reaction, administer a dosage of Benadryl (1 mg/lb) every six hours. Benadryl comes in 25 mg capsules or as a liquid. For pets up to 30 pounds, use 25 mg. For pets 30 to 80 pounds, use 50 mg. For pets 80 pounds and up, use 75 mg.

Dryer SheetUse a dryer sheet to help with thunderstorm phobias. Anxiety in a pet during a thunderstorm isn't the flashes of light or the sound, but a buildup of static electricity in their coat. Rub a dryer sheet on the coat to remove the static electricity. It will reduce or eliminate the pet's extreme anxiety and discomfort. (This method works about 50 percent of the time.)

Pepto Bismol
Use Pepto to help with an upset stomach and vomiting. Use this only for dogs; it contains an aspirin-like substance that is bad for cats. The dose for a dog (either liquid or tablets) is a child's dose for every 40 pounds of body weight every six hours. For example: A 10-pound dog would receive one-quarter of a child's dose, and an 80-pound dog would receive twice the amount of a child's dose.

Kaopectate
Kaopectate helps with diarrhea. You can also give your pet Gatorade, Pedialyte, or Ensure to rehydrate and replace potassium, sodium, and essential minerals after diarrhea or vomiting.

Canned Pumpkin (No Spices)
Canned pumpkin helps with constipation. Note: You can also use Dulcolax or Metamucil.

Vaseline
Use vaseline on cuts or to prevent ice formation. Rub it on the affected area to protect a wound from further contamination. You can also place it between the animal's pads or toes during the winter to prevent ice formation.

Epsom SaltsUse epsom salts for abscess/wound treatment. Use the salts in a soak for irritated, itchy skin.

Things to Remember When Using Household RemediesYou should always consult your vet first regarding your pet's situation and then he or she can suggest a home remedy for you to try. Depending on your pet's weight, your vet will determine what dosage you should give. Depending on what's wrong with your pet, the vet will have you give the home remedy, then consult back with him or her in a couple days if the situation worsens or doesn't improve.

Welcome Spring???/Why is it SNOWING?!

Supposedly spring started Thursday, March 20, but I am not too sure.
When I checked my weather widget on Monday, March 24, the forecast called for SNOW on Thursday. I didn't say anything to anyone about this because I did not want to be accused of being delirious (seriously) and figured the widget was wrong. Plus, it is almost APRIL.

Come Thursday, the news showed snow on the valley floor and at the coast. The same thing happened on Friday. I even got caught in a little snow flurry on Friday while out running errands at work. It was so strange to feel so cold at this time of year.

So today there was a flash of lightening and it looked like someone was taking a picture and then the thunder rumbled the town. The the hail and snow fell with madness. This is a picture from a room in my home.

I thought that first picture would suck, so I ran downstairs and took a picture out my front door. It was SO COLD outside and you could hear a million emergency vehicles' sirens going off (but I don't know why).

My poor plant. I brought it back outside because the weather had been nice and decent until now. Here it is full of snow and hail.

This does not make any sense. After this, it started to rain really hard and then it got really nice and sunny and the skies were blue until dark.

Seriously?

I love animals, but I think these people may have taken their "pet care" a little too far.

This is a video about a hippo that is VERY spoiled.

This one is about a horse that likes cheeseburgers, fetching beer, and answering the phone. Oh. Willlllburrrrr...what has this world come to?

Fun Projects

I found some more fun projects that are friendly to small budgets.

Click on the picture or the underlined word to see how to make the projects.

Yes, this is from Martha. It is a wall-mounted organizer that looks easy enough for me to make.

This is from "Not Martha".
It is a wall-mounted shoe rack. I think it is a great idea. Check it out!

This is a cute Envelope Book that one can make out of envelopes. If you make one of these, you won't have to buy an expensive notebook with pockets.

If you office is like mine, there is a lot of paper in the recycle container. This project is about turning that paper into your own bound book. It is a really good way to reuse paper that was only printed on one side.

My Fabulous Weekend!

This weekend was the BEST in a long time!

After we checked into our hotel, Kyle and I got our couple's massage at Aqua Terra Massage.

The massage tables are really comfortable

They have cool decorations, too.

These were our therapists, Eryk and Faye. They are both really nice and smart.

Here is a picture of their massage studio.

We went to eat dinner later at a Cuban restaurant. It was really good. Kyle had "ropa vieja" and I had the "pollo criollo". We were too full for dessert, or I would have ordered a "tres leches".

At our hotel on the waterfront, we were upgraded to the "Executive Suite" (it said it on the door). It was a really nice room.
This is the living room part of it.

Here is the dining room. During our stay, room service brought us up complimentary ice cream and sodas...and chocolates!

This a water fountain decoration thing.

Really nice miniature shampoos and other toiletries.

The toilet had a footstool/ottoman! Just kidding, it is a stool for the vanity or for next to the tub.

His & hers sinks.

On my birthday, I got breakfast in bed! I really do look that FABULOUS in the morning. Here I am trying to figure out what to eat first.

I couldn't eat it all, so I got the french toast. It was coated with corn flakes and topped with bananas and strawberries. It was weird, but good.

Miniature condiments. The sugar packet is the only regular-sized item.

This is the view out our window.

By law, it has to rain on Easter Sunday here. We tried to go to the mall with no luck. But we did see this neat bike with a motor on it. I wonder what those guys in the background are laughing about.

Since the mall was closed, we went to Voodoo Doughnuts, which is always open. I got a sugar doughnut with raspberry filling. Kyle got a HUGE bear claw. They were really good.

I can be a disgustingly, messy eater and usually the food ends up somewhere on my face.

This is the chandelier inside the doughnut shop.

We went to Todai for dinner. This is my birthday cake ensemble: cheesecake, key lime pie, strawberry cake, creme puff, and a creme brulee. Of course...all miniature.

Kyle stuck the chopstick out of the window at the restaurant in hopes to poke a mall rat.

Speaking of mall rats, this guy on the escalator lost his meth. He lost it outside of the window behind Kyle and me and walked away. I think his cross dressing friend that had a really bad wig, ugly red purse, red jacket, and out-of-season flip-flops left it behind the window and then a security guard found it and took it to the security office all annoyed. Then our escalator friend here came to look for it and passed by a million times looking for the bags.

The picture I took of this curious fellow wasn't very good, so I made a sketch in case mall security wanted it. The guy really looked like this!

My Latest Crafts

I did a lot of craft these last couple of weeks. I made a wrist rest for my office at work, jewelry for my sister-in-law, and a couple of "paper doll" cards. Click on any of the pictures to see it larger (like the jewelry).

WRIST REST

This is non-slip stuff so the wrist rest doesn't slide off your desk.

Pick out a favorite piece of fabric.

Pet your cat. Mine was looking at me all crazy.

Cut out a rectangle that is twice the length of the desired wrist rest length.

Pin the grippy stuff to it and hand sew it to the fabric. I couldn't put it in the sewing machine because it was too grippy.

Take a mini tortilla break.

Sew it all up, right sides together. Flip right-side-out and fill with rice. All done!

JEWELRY for my SISTER-IN-LAW

I made a set with shell earrings and the other beads are all glass and some stone.

PAPER DOLL CARDS

I drew and colored the dolls and dressed them up with fabric, lace ribbon, silk flowers, and handmade paper that has flower petals in it. The pink doll is holding a mini-card.

More Great Videos!

The Abba Teen (or A-Teens) were pretty popular when I was in high school. I always thought they were corny...their teeth are too white and the smiles too big:

This video features one of my goals in life: learning to moon walk. So far, I have failed at it. This video is hilarious AND informational:

This is the classic "Evolution of Dance" video. It still cracks me up:

More panda stuff!

I really dislike...no, hate...seafood. However, this picture of sushi is cute. This is probably the only time I'll say sushi is cute.

This has to be one of my all-time favorite viral videos. There is a mama panda and a baby panda. The baby panda sneezes really loud and it scares the bejeezus out of the mama panda. You might have to watch it a couple time to catch everything because everything happens really fast.

$1000 per Day

$1000 per day...so many jokes...so inappropriate.

I'm talking about the story of Cici, the pink poodle in Colorado. Her owner died her fur pink with beet juice. Now the authorities in Boulder are fining the owner $1000 a day for everyday that Cici remains pink. Yep, there's a law against dying your pet pink over there in an effort to save bunnies and little chicks the hardship of being colored pastel colors during Easter.

The owner of Cici has also received several complaints, as has the Humane Society, about the pink dog.

What would be more inhumane though: leaving the dog pink because of harmless beet juice or using harmful chemicals to bleach its fur?

It's a pink dog...a cute pink dog. There are better things to cry about: we are in a war and children are starving around the world for goodness' sake. I doubt that $1000 a day is not going to feed hungry children.

Crafty Ol' Me

Activities with youth are always going on where I work. I led an activity where we made clay monsters where youth create a creature out of the special clay we have. When the monsters were done, we baked them and that is it.

Here is the one I made: a little bird I named "Angelina". She has a lot of fingerprints on her, but she is perfect otherwise.

This is the birthday card I made for Kyle. It is actually a shadow box birthday card.
