Did you hear the news about Walgreens and Express Script? As of January 1, 2012, Walgreens is no longer part of the Express Scripts’ national pharmacy provider network. This change also affects Duane Reade pharmacies in New York City. A December 30, 2011 press release from the Associated Press states:
“Walgreen has said it would rather give up the revenue it gets from Express Scripts, which is based in St. Louis than continue filling unprofitable prescriptions.”
Consequently, this change impacts all U.S. military personnel who use Tricare. In order to help protect America’s service men and women, Walgreens offered to price-match or beat the adjusted prescription costs of other pharmacies in the Tricare provider network that serves military personnel. Attempts to negotiate a separate contract with Express Scripts for Tricare members also failed.
Express Script members who don’t know about the change are receiving unwelcome surprises when they order refills on their prescriptions from Walgreens. This contract change greatly affects members who have an established relationship with a Walgreens pharmacist or if Walgreens is the most convenient or closest pharmacy in an individual’s area.
To help ease the burden and make the transition smoother, Walgreens is offering a discount on its Walgreens Prescription Savings Club membership. Through January 31, 2012, individuals can purchase an annual membership for $5 (a $15 savings) and families can enroll for $10. This discount is also perfect if you don’t have health insurance, your insurance doesn’t cover certain medications (like contraceptives) or if your pet needs to take prescription medications that you fill at a traditional pharmacy. Through the Prescription Savings Club, you can save money on more than 8,000 generic and brand-name medications, nebulizers, diabetic supplies and flu shots.
