The Great Backyard Bird Count

This weekend is The Great Backyard Bird Count across the continent! The Great Backyard Bird Count is led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, with sponsorship from Wild Birds Unlimited.

The neat thing about this event is that anyone can participate in it and it is free. So what is this bird count thing? Basically, take at least 15 minutes of time between now and the 18th of February and stare into your backyard. Notice any birds you may see and record them on a tally sheet. After gathering your data, report it to the GBBC. Now you are a citizen-scientist!

The data you report will help bird scientists keep track of migration patterns, disease, bird populations, invasive species, etc.

In my neck of the woods, I see Canadian geese flying overhead, crows, blue jays, and little brown birds that jump around (??).

Look in your backyard and be a citizen-scientist today!
