I was contacted today by the UNC Blood Donation Center in Chapel Hill to let me know that Spring Break has left their donation center empty. However, cancer patients all over the U.S. cannot take a break during this week.
One of the patients who has received platelets on several occasions is my sister--she has acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She has needed a platelet transfusion on several occasions and will continue to need them in the future. Please, take a couple of hours to donate platelets at your local donation center. The process is PAINLESS, you get FREE parking (if there is a charge) and the center provides you with free snacks, drinks and your choice of movie (they have all the latest). Plus, you get to help save a life. Trust me, you won't miss the platelets they take, but they will make a world of difference to a cancer patient whose body is depleted of them.
