Food Scale Review

I recently had the opportunity to review the NutriCrystal Wireless Smart Food Scale from ReFleX Wireless, Inc. It is the self-proclaimed first "Bluetooth Smart Ready" food scale on the market and it connects to your computer or an iOS or Android device via Bluetooth.

ReFleX Wireless shares that this scale is good for the following people:
  • Individuals who want to lose weight and want to manage their food portion sizes.
  • Diabetics who wish to monitor their carbohydrate intake,
  • Body builders who want to track their protein intake.
  • Individuals who want to track their consumption of nutrients.

My Review

The NutriCrystal Wireless Smart Food Scale is lightweight and thin, making it convenient for storage. I  like that there are two different ways to power the scale: use four AAA batteries or recharge the scale's included lithium polymer batteries with a standard USB cable (included).

I found that the NutriCrystal Wireless Smart Food Scale isn't as simple to use as other food scales. For one, you can't always weigh food with a simple touch of a button. You first have to press the main power button. Then, if you want to change the measurement units, you have to push a button on the bottom of the scale or adjust the units via the app, which seems inconvenient to me.

The app functions are pretty handy, though. As you weigh the food, you can input the type of food that you're weighing into the app and instantly get access to the nutrition information via the USDA database or Health Canada food database. You can add custom food entries and scan bar codes to input information. In addition, you can calculate the food values of multiple items (like a piece of cheese, four grapes and a slice of toast) at the same time.

The Verdict

If you are tech savvy and enjoy using apps, the NutriCrystal Wireless Smart Food Scale may be a good fit for you. However, if you want something that gives you simple push-and-go technology, you may find the scale a bit frustrating.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
