Mary Bragg “Tattoos & Bruises” Album Review

While folk music is not at the top of my list of favorite music genres, I do enjoy it. Mary Bragg’s “Tattoos & Bruises” helped me have a greater appreciation for this type of music. Bragg blends rock, pop, country and folk sounds in her third studio album, which features the same accomplished band of players who perform with Bragg in her live shows. Band member include Rich Hinman, Steve Elliot and Adam Levy (guitars), Jordan Perlson and Brian Wolfe (drums), Jimmy Sullivan (bass), Mike Cassedy (piano, organ) and Marika Hughes (cello).

This was my first time hearing Bragg’s work and her style reminded me of Amanda Marshall and Sheryl Crow. The music has an acoustic feel, is easy to listen to and is great for relaxing. Bragg’s lyrics, which are sometimes heart breaking, talk about real-life situations. The maturity of the album is a nice change from today’s nonsensical arrangements from money- and fame-hungry artists seeking to make the latest dance club mix. Another interesting aspect about “Tattoos & Bruises” is the lack of back-up singers and vocal harmonies. Bragg puts herself out there and bears her heart and voice.

My favorite song in the album is “When Your Heart Belongs to Another” because it reminds me of a campfire tune. Like many of the songs on the album, this one is fun for singing along and enjoying a glass of iced tea.

“Tattoos & Bruises” releases nationwide on June 7, 2011.
