How to Stay Safe in Your Home

Your home, regardless of its size, is your castle. One of the most important things of being in your home is peace of mind and feeling safe. You leave your home with the expectation that you’ll find it in the same condition that you left it. When you go to sleep at night, you do so with the hope that your slumber will remain undisturbed by a stranger.

To help keep your family and your home safe:

  • Lock all your doors (including the garage door) and windows, even when you’re home.
  • Use an outdoor light with a motion sensor so it’s harder for would-be thieves to find shadows in which to hide.
  • Don’t leave notes on your door that tell others that you’re not home.
  • Have the post office hold your mail if you plan to be gone for more than a couple days.
  • Avoid hiding a key outside of your house, like under a rock. Instead, give a copy of your key to a trust-worthy neighbor or a friend who lives close to your home.
  • Make your home seem occupied while you’re out. Set the timer on your lights and TV so they turn on and off at certain times.
  • Get a dog, even a small one. Dogs always seem to bark when someone is at the door or around the house. If owning a dog isn’t a good option, consider installing an alarm system. Learn more about Alarm Systems Isle La Motte.
  • Plant shrubs (especially spiky ones) under your windows.
