The Importance of Magnesium

The bones in your body contain over 50 percent magnesium. Magnesium is one of the most important and most overlooked minerals that the body needs. According to Dr.Mercola, up to 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this mineral. While the recommended intake of magnesium is around 400 milligrams, many people are deficient because of factors such as stress, prescription medications, sugar (carbs), antibiotics, fluoride, excess vitamin D and excess calcium. According to Dr.Carolyn Dean, for example, it takes up to 56 molecules of magnesium to metabolize one molecule of sugar.

Individuals with the following symptoms may also have a magnesium deficiency:

  • Anxiety
  • ADD
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle twitches
  • Irritability
  • Constipation
  • Heart palpitations
  • Kidney stones
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Irritable bladder
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Obesity
  • Angina
  • Acid reflux
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Inflammation
  • Hypertension
  • Forgetfulness
  • Insomnia
  • Diabetes

What Type of Magnesium to Take

The best type of magnesium varies by individual. Magnesium chloride is the most absorbable, according to Dr.Sircus. I use this in footbaths and to make magnesium oil. It has a nice calming effect on my muscles and nerves.

Some sources say that magnesium oxide, the type you find in the supplement section of the grocery store, is the worst because it is the least absorbable and may cause diarrhea. Some people, however, tolerate it well and increase their absorption by allowing the supplement to dissolve in water.

I recently tried magnesium L-threonate by Magtein. This is a newer type of magnesium supplement that is supposed to boost your brain health. I used it for a few weeks and didn’t really notice a difference. It’s important to note that I take already take 1,000 milligrams of magnesium daily and use magnesium oil. Magtein states that it can take up to 12 weeks to notice a difference. Magtein’s supplement contains 147 milligrams of magnesium in two capsules, which is nowhere near the recommended daily intake. But, a little bit of magnesium is better than no magnesium.

Talk to your physician to learn about the best type of magnesium for you.
