Who Knew I Could Look So Bad?

There is this really fun site called YearbookYourself where you upload your picture to see how you would look with different decades of hair-dos. I had to do it after Kate showed me the program!

This one isn't too bad I guess.

Uhhh...my head looks like it's going to fall off.

This is just a regular pic of me in the morning.

My perm gone bad.

Horrid.

This one looks like it could actually maybe be me back in the 1980's/early 90's. Check out the wicked Lee press-on nail (thumb).

This is how I would look if I was male and a transvestite.

I don't even know what to say abou this one.

No, no, no, no, no.

My impression of Barbara Streisand

Who in the world would ever do this to their hair?

A very strange look for me. My face looks super long.

My hair impression of Jennifer Gray from in Ferris Buhler's Day Off.

Very wholesome, like a bran muffin.

Which is your favorite?

Burst the "Bubble"!

A life-sized cardboard cutout of Barak Obama was hung from a tree in front of Minthorn Hall at George Fox University yesterday. It was suspended on a branch with fishing line around the neck. On the cutout, was a sign that read "Act 6 Reject".

George Fox University is a Christian university. I went to that university. It truly angers me to see that students/staff there have not moved on from their sheltered ways. Fox, as the university is called by staff, alumn, and those in town, has what is called a "bubble". The bubble is the little community where the students are in their own world, separate from everything and everyone else. It is a world where people are expected to act a certain way and say the right things. Everything has to be fair and there are standards to be met.

Act 6 is an initiative developed a couple years ago to try to diversify the campus. Full-ride scholarships are awarded to minority students with Act 6; a gift many do not have the luck to recieve who want to go to a $35,000+ per year college. I was a recipient of a multicultural scholarship when I went to GFU. I learned really fast to not mention it to anyone. The other students were bitter about affirmative action and would make hateful, jealous remarks about such scholarships.

I had a roommate whose family was of Middle Eastern origins. They were a nice, Christian family. After September 11, 2001, my roommate was told to go "terrorize someone else" by GFU parking security personnel when she went to dispute a parking ticket she got from campus security. She didn't want to tell, but I told for her. We were told that the situation was going to be taken care of and not to go around talking about it.

This hateful act at Fox is obviously not an issue about Obama; it is an issue about race. Robin Baker, the president of the univeristy, waited until the next day to make any public statements about the incident. He basically said that what the person did is not very nice and we need to all love each other. How sweet. You can find George Fox's statement about the incident and see Robin Baker speak during chapel here. Read Robin Baker's transcript of his speech here. Robin Baker even wrote a letter to Senator Obama and posted on the GFU website. Why?

Where is the multicultural office in all of this? Yes, they are tending to the students who have been deeply hurt by this act. But now is their chance to stand-up and show some authority on the subject. This department needs to take a stand and show that this action is not to be tolerated. There is a time to hand-hold and a time for action.

Now is a time for action and to pop the bubble that has clouded over the university for so long. The world is not made up of blonde hair, anglo-americans. Duh!

Going, but Broke

I love going out to do different things, but am kind of totally broke. I am having to be really creative in my extra curricular activities so I won't have to spend so much cash. I've come up with a small list of activities that are pocket book-friendly:

  • Go to the nature observatory with a friend and describe to them any birds you may see, but don't tell them what kind it is. Your friend has to draw the bird based on your description. Take a food and have a picnic, too.
  • See what promotions your favorite theater is offering. For example, my favorite theater is having a food drive for the food bank. If you take 3 cans of food on a specific day, you get to see a movie for free and they throw in a free popcorn!
  • Some libraries offer free passes to local attractions. Ones in my area offer free one-day passes to the zoo, Japanese and Chinese gardens, museums, etc.
  • Check out websites or blogs made by people who live in your area. They may have information on free/inexpensive events going on in your area.
  • Cut up your old magazines and make funny collages. These can be made into cards/postcards, art for your home, or something for your art journal.
  • Make a new recipe or experiment in your kitchen with food you already have. (Personal note: I did this today. I tried to make homemade pasta, but it came out more like spatzel.)
Any other ideas out there? Comment me and let me know.

I Just Don't See It

Ever since I was 19-years-old people have made the comment that I look like Sandra Bullock. My boss today even made a comment of the sort. I guess there are worse people to look like.

Me Time

I've had to get into the habit lately of waking up earlier than I would like, but for a really good reason: me time.

Ever since I've started to go to the chiropractor (three times a week), I've been getting up at crazy, early hours--like, 8 o'clock in the morning. Geesh. The pay off: 60-minute massage soon after, before being adjusted. I find that I don't complain about getting up "early" when it is a massage I am looking forward to. I only wish I had the same enthusiasm for church sometimes.

New Hair!

I finally got my hair cut! See the pictures below. It was long enough to donate since at least 10 inches could be chopped off. All of my curls went to Locks of Love. For the donation, I received a free haircut. It's a good deal if you ask me.

Too Much To Do...

Too much apathy.

In other news, Kyle's getting his hair cut this weekend. WOW! After two and a half years, it's coming off. Personally, I didn't mind the long hair (as long as mine was longer).

I'm watching Donna Dewberry paint on TV and I am fascinated. I hate it when people say they cannot draw or paint because every one can. The difference is how they feel about their art work. It amazes me how one line in a drawing can make it look 100% better. I think most people make art too serious and hard and that is why they are not content with their work.

What a Pain in the Neck...

...and back and shoulders and head. Being rear-ended sucks. People, when you drive watch the road. Don't decide it is a good idea to have your car moving at the same time you are looking into your purse and are digging around in it. Stop your car before it stops because you ran into my car. Idiots.

Needless to say, I thought that I would be feeling more cheery three days after the collision (not "accident", because accident implies no one was at fault...one of my favorite Hot Fuzz sayings). I am going look for a chiropractor because I am tired of my back and head killing me.

I may even give acupuncture a shot. Kyle's trying it out tomorrow and I'll see how he likes it. It's about time I balance my chi.

The painting shown is by Carol Santora. It is called Rear Ended. Get it? Ha-ha!
