Disaster Preparedness Ebook Review

Survival of the Smartest: The First 72 Hours by Aaron Turpen is a book that provides you with the basics of emergency preparedness. Turpen describes different disaster scenarios like earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis and other natural disasters, and provides a step-by-step explanation on how to escape these danger with your life intact. 

Disaster preparedness is a topic many families neglect and regret their disregard when it matters the most. In Survival of the Smartest, Turpen explains how to put together an emergency grab-n-go bag (which he calls a “bug out bag”), an emergency 72 hour kit for your car and the supplies you need to survive for three days. The tips provided are easy to understand and I truly believe that an emergency disaster plan is something every family should form and practice together. 

The only part of the book that I did not agree with was the section with tips to desensitize yourself to the potential gruesome aftermath of a disaster. Ideas include experiencing pain and danger, exposing yourself to death and blood and so on. While these are ways that may help you get desensitized to the carnage you may witness, they may inflict more psychological damage than help. However, I do understand Turpen’s point in adding these elements to his book—to learn to keep cool when it counts the most.

  1. Thanks for the great review, Flora! I appreciate the feedback regarding desensitization. Having seen emergency medical situations first hand and the bad effects that the trauma can have on those who would otherwise be able to help, I included that information in the book as a warning to folks.

    Truly, though, the best thing you can do is just think about the things that could happen. Wargaming (daydreaming with a purpose) is much more beneficial than any of the other ideas I gave for desensitization. Realize that bad things can happen sometimes and you'll be yards ahead of most other people when the time to run comes.
