Did you participate in Dove’s third annual Self-Esteem
Weekend? This event took place on October 5 through 7, 2012, and started with a
silent march kick-off event in Times Square. Organizations like the Boys &
Girls Club and the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. participated, and Dove unveiled a “Let’s
Talk” area where women and girls could sit and have a conversation about
self-esteem and beauty.
During the Self-Esteem weekend, Dove’s partners hosted
events nationwide. For example, Walmart stores setup special areas where
shoppers could share encouraging messages to girls. The Kroeger Company hosted
a self-esteem event for local Boys & Girls Club members in Cincinnati.
The Dove Movement for Self-Esteem
Dove’s Movement for Self-Esteem is based on the belief that
beauty should not be a source of anxiety. Instead, it should be a source of
confidence. Dove is committed to helping all women reach their full potential
and discovered in a recent survey that:
- Only 11 percent of girls between the ages of 10 and 17 comfortably use the word beautiful to describe themselves
- 60 percent of girls between the ages of 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities (e.g. going to school) when they feel bad about their looks
- 72 percent of girls between the ages of 10 to 17 feel pressure to be beautiful
- 66 percent of girls in the U.S. and 59 percent of the girls in Canada stated that their mothers are their number one female role model
The Dove Movement for Self-Esteem is about starting conversations
regarding beauty, as a simple discussion can make a world of difference. Girls
actively listen to all the female role models in their lives, and just one
conversation can help a girl feel better about herself. So far, Dove’s self-esteem
program has reached over 9 million girls. The goal is to reach 15 million by
2015.
