Yanni--“Truth of Touch” album review

Yanni lost the mustache and the long hair (a while ago), and now has a new album that I had the chance to review. Truth of Touch, released March 22, 2011, is Yanni's first instrumental release of original compositions in over eight years. Yani explains, “I work the rhythms in this album. There is a beautiful complexity in these rhythms, a new sound design. I think the melodic content is very strong and very memorable. I was having fun with this album and that’s going to become apparent.”

To my surprise, Truth of Touch is not horrible. I had never heard any of Yanni’s previous works, only the jokes about him. So, I cleared the jokes and the images of his mustache and big hair out of my mind, and put on my headphones. I liked the first song, “Truth of Touch,” right away; it reminded me of being at a spa. The overall ambiance of the album is nice—it is good for relaxing, meditating and as background music as I work. My favorite songs were “Flash of Color” and “Vertigo,” which have a Middle Eastern feel. I was also really impressed with “O Luce che Brilla Nell’Oscurità.” This song features Nathan Pacheco, a classical singer who could rival Josh Grobin. However, I hated the song “I’m So” because the voice in it is extremely annoying, in my opinion, and makes the song seem like a pretentious attempt to create music that is dance club-worthy.

If you are a Yanni fan or enjoy instrumental music, you will not be disappointed with Truth of Touch.
